Astigmatism

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error that is fairly common and causes blurry vision. Astigmatism is caused by either an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. Inside the eye of a person who has astigmatism, light does not focus directly on the retina, which is in the back of the eye. This makes a person's vision blurry at all visual ranges. It can also cause headaches and discomfort. This type of vision problem is typically combined with other problems, such as not being able to see close up or far away. These different conditions are called refractive errors because they impact the ability of the eye to bend light. If you think you have astigmatism and you live in the Boston area, stop in and see an eye doctor at Eyes Over Copley.

Can My Optometrist Help My Astigmatism?

Your eye doctor can pretty easily diagnose astigmatism with a full eye exam. Fortunately, there are a number of ways an optometrist can treat astigmatism. The simplest way is with eyeglasses. If you have astigmatism, your glasses will have lenses with a special cylindrical prescription to provide additional power to the parts of the lens where you need it.

Contacts are another great option used to treat astigmatism. Contacts are able to provide clearer vision in a wider visual range than glasses can. Today, there are several different types of contacts that may work well for this type of treatment.

Lasik surgery can correct an astigmatism by reshaping the cornea of the eye. This type of surgery removes tissue from the inner layer of the cornea to give you better vision.
