Common Eye Disorders

We often take our vision for granted... until we are suddenly confronted with a problem with our eyes. At Eyes Over Copley in Boston, MA we understand how distressing it can be when your eyes feel uncomfortable or you have trouble seeing properly. Our highly experienced staff can diagnose common eye disorders and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Refractive Issues

More than 10 million Americans require vision correction with refractive lenses, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. An eye exam can lead to an easy fix for these issues with eyeglasses or contact lenses. There are also many lens treatments to help improve night vision and to reduce computer or digital device eyestrain.

Dry Eye

Dry eye can occur at any age but it is a common result of aging. It can also be caused by dry climate or indoor dry air environments, computer use, disease, and certain medications. There are many treatments to help relieve the discomfort caused by dry eye.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs most commonly in people over 50, but even children can develop glaucoma. More than one type of glaucoma can affect your eyes. In the most common type, primary open-angle glaucoma, the increase of pressure in the eyes causes damage to the optic nerve. This damage can lead to a permanent loss of peripheral vision. It is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. Glaucoma often does not have any symptoms, so annual eye exams are your best defense against vision loss from glaucoma. Early detection can prevent blindness.

Cataracts

A cataract is a cloudy spot or opacity that develops in the lens in the eye and is most commonly a natural part of the aging process. It is most likely to develop in people over age 60 but it can develop in younger people as well. The larger it gets, the more it affects vision and can also cause glare. Eventually, most people will need cataract surgery to replace the lens with an implant.

Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis or "pink eye" is one of the most common eye disorders, especially in children. Doctors estimate that there are over 3 million cases per year. The redness is caused by an inflammation of the membrane that covers the whites of the eye and eyelid -the conjunctiva. It is usually easily treated with warm compresses and/or an antibiotic but can be quite contagious. At Eyes Over Copley we treat this common condition almost every day.
