FSA

Many people who have health insurance or vision plans have a flex spending account to go along with it. Most insurance covers annual eye exams as well as medical visits with your eye doctor. Your flex spending account covers other things that are not covered by standard health or vision insurance. Our eye care professionals at Eyes Over Copley honor flex spending accounts.

How Does Flex Spending Account Work?

If you have a flex spending account (FSA), you can set aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck before taxes to put toward medical care. The money is taken from your paycheck every month, and you can use the funds for eye care expenses at any time of the year.

Use It or Lose It

Beginning in January, the money that you agreed to set aside will start coming out of your paycheck. The money will continue coming out all year long. In most cases, if you don't use the money in your account by the end of the year, it does not carry over to the next. If you don't use your FSA by the end of the year, you lose it. You must spend the money in the account before the calendar year ends.

What Can I Buy With a Flex Spending Account?

All flex spending accounts are different. However, the standard plans are mostly the same. There are several things that you can buy with your FSA, including:

Eye examinations and/or copays, contact lens examinations, and fittings

Prescription eyeglasses: You can use your FSA to buy eyeglasses. If you don't have enough to cover the glasses in your account, the rest can be paid for out of pocket.

Prescription sunglasses: Prescription sunglasses are a great option for your FSA because they aren't covered by standard vision insurance. For your sunglasses to be covered, they must have prescription lenses.

Reading glasses: Reading glasses, both prescription and non-prescription, can be purchased through your flex spending account.

Contact lenses: Contact lenses can be purchased through your flex spending account. If you wear contacts, you will need a contact lens exam. Some FSA plans cover these exams, and some do not. Reach out to your human resource department to find out what your flex spending plan covers.
