Dry Eye after LASIK

Even when your vision improves after LASIK surgery, dry eye can be a common complication. LASIK itself may not be the trigger since about three-quarters of those who have LASIK surgery also report having dry eye before the procedure. If you are experiencing dry eye symptoms, we serve the greater Boston area, including Cambridge, Brookline and Newton. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Fox at Eyes Over Copley for an evaluation.

Will You Have Dry Eyes after LASIK Surgery?

Having dry eyes long-term is rare and unfortunately, there is no way to predict if you will have dry eye after the procedure or how long your symptoms will last. Certain factors can make your dry eye last longer. These include having dry eye before your surgery, wearing contacts, having diabetes, or being very nearsighted before LASIK. Our optometrist can go over your risk factors if you have any concerns.

Why LASIK Surgery Causes Dry Eye

Researchers don't know exactly why dry eye happens after LASIK, but there are several theories. Surgery may cause some nerve damage to the cornea. During the surgery, the surgeon reshapes the cornea and removes some of the tissue under it. As part of this process, the surgeon may cut some of the nerves of the cornea.

While this doesn’t affect your vision, it does break down the communication between the tear glands and your cornea. This can typically return to normal but sometimes it doesn’t return as quickly. Another cause can be the inflammation from the surgery. The new shape of the cornea changes the way the eyelid interacts with your eye’s surface and this can affect your tear production and blinking. All of these factors may lead to dry eye.

How Long Will It Last?

Dry eye symptoms will be most noticeable immediately after surgery. Most people say the symptoms get better six months to a year after the procedure.
