Diagnosing dry eye involves a combination of clinical evaluation, symptom assessment, and specialized tests performed by an eye care professional. Dry eye syndrome is a complex condition, and an accurate diagnosis is essential to determine the underlying causes and develop an effective treatment plan.
At Eyes Over Copley in Boston, MA, our optometrist can run tests if you have dry eye symptoms. These exams help you get an accurate diagnosis to discuss treatment options. The following questions can help you learn more about testing for this condition.
The slit lamp test, Schirmer’s test, and tear break-up time (TBUT) tests are done to find out what’s causing this condition. Dry eyes can happen due to different problems with your tears. Eye doctors must know the exact cause to determine the right treatment approach.
This test involves checking to see if the glands in your eyes produce enough tears. Eye doctors put dilation drops in your eyes and look through a slit lamp microscope to check your eyes and eyelids. These special drops make it easier for eye doctors to see your tears.
This test is slightly different from a slit lamp test, but it’s also done to see if you have enough tears. Eye doctors numb your eyes with eye drops, then put a tiny piece of paper at the edges of your eyelids. You’ll keep your eyes closed for 5 minutes, and then our eye doctors will check how wet the paper is.
Eye doctors do this test to see how quickly your tears evaporate. This test involves having dye placed in your eye. You’ll then be asked to blink so the dye can spread over your eye. After this, you’ll avoid blinking so our eye doctor can see how long the dye lasts on your eye.
Schedule an appointment to check your eyes if you have blurry vision, eyelid inflammation, scratchy eyes, or other dry eye symptoms. Obtaining a diagnosis means you can start treatment for relief.
